Reflection

Ethnocentrism is defined as "a term applied to the cultural or ethnic bias—whether conscious or unconscious—in which an individual views the world from the perspective of his or her own group" (Oxford Bibliographies, 2012). Ethnocentrism its understood as one of the roots that leads to racial profiling, and, it is worrying for us because it is becoming a more specific targeted way of discrimination. In the USA, more specifically at Minneapolis, Minnesota, on May the 25th of 2020, an african-american man called George Floyd was brutally killed by the police for committing a supposed (not even investigated) minor charge crime (paying with a fake 20-dollar bill on a convenience store). The Review of Human Rights said that this situation.

"highlighted the problematic racial dimension of policing and egregious violation of human rights commitments on the part of the government", it is necessary to emphasize that the discrimination made towards Floyd, ended up in a fatal crime done by the ones that are supposed to defend and watch over the discriminated. Who is going to protect rights of the African American? Who is going to watch over the security of the black community? If the ones that do this are doing all the opposite things.

Othering, is one of the major causes of racial profiling in people in the United States. It can also be explained by the case of George Floyd because he was separated and mistreated, he was treated as a lesser human being, which would never or rarely have happened if he was a citizen with the same skin color as the cops, i.e. a white person. George being a black person was immediately determinant for his rights not to be respected because he did not fit into the social norms established by white men, he was not considered part of their "group" and as a consequence ended in his death.
