Fake news: George Stinney Jr case
The case of George Stinney Jr. is truly controversial, as his name and innocence were tarnished for 70 years by a fake news story that led to his death. George Stinney Jr. was sentenced to death in the electric chair in 1944 for allegedly being responsible for the deaths of two young white girls. This is a clear example of how false news that was not investigated in the United States can end the unjustified life of a person, in this case of a child, much more so in the past when the rights of black people did not exist and what was valid was declared by white people.
Although 70 years have passed, it is still an ongoing problem. At that time they simply judged a child, a poor child who lived in a black neighborhood, a child who was not allowed to defend himself fairly or with dignity, they simply assumed that because he was black he had to be the murderer, they assumed that the rights of the whites were more important than those of the blacks, and in less than a year a 14 year old child was executed, without sufficient evidence and with an illogical penalty. For 70 years, many people condemned a child to death, judged and harassed his family because of a missing piece of news. After this we should think that cases like this should not happen, but it makes us think, how far have we advanced?
